Meet the Cook

I'm really an old-school dork at heart. So what better way to tell you more about myself, and what makes me tick, than by filling out one of those old-school, dorky surveys! I found this one on another blog and thought it'd be fun to do.

Again, because I'm a dork. No shame.
The dorkiest of Dork Pictures taken to make my then-5 year-old smile.
It sums me up pretty well, right down to that crazy colorful purse.

What was the last thing you watched on TV?
The Blacklist. It's my new favorite. Or it is at least until Game of Thrones comes back.

When did you last step outside? What were you doing?
Monday night was Cousin Date Night! Went to a few local restaurants to enjoy a few hours of adult time and adult food and adult beverages. Sadly, we were home by 10:00. *sigh*

What is on the walls of the room you are in?
Since my computer lives in my sunroom, most of the walls are windows. But I do have a print of San Diego (where I was born), and two pictures of dandelions (made and framed by my incredibly talented sister-in-law).
It's a gray, dreary, typical-Milwaukee kind of morning.

California Girl!

I love these. She MADE the frames too!!

If you became a multi-millionaire overnight, what would you buy?
Land. A gorgeous piece of semi-wooded property, not too far from Milwaukee because I like being fairly close to the city, and build a 3,000-ish square foot house with a full basement complete with a bar for entertaining, a dedicated yoga space, and a media room with leather recliners. And let's not forget about that chef's kitchen with a walk-in pantry. Not that I think about what I'd do with multi-millions or anything...

Tell me something about you that most people don't know.
I dream about writing a cookbook and being about to support my family through my love of food.

Who made the last incoming call on your phone?
My dentist office, making sure I don't skip out on my cleaning appointment that I've already rescheduled once, through no fault of my own though.

If you could change something about your home, without worry about expense or mess, what would you do?
I'd bomb my kitchen and start over. To give you an idea of how yucky it is, someone once thought a pink tile backsplash was a good idea. But not just any pink, they chose a particular shade of pink that often reminds me of fluids that might come out of your stomach on a bad day. Or Pepto Bismol. Yuck. Gross. Ew.

I might save my stove though. I do like my stove.

What was the last thing you bought?
I took my cousin to the Spice House and Cheese Mart. So like any good patron of course I added to my spice and cheese collections. I got more taco seasoning, DG's Pizza seasoning, garam masala, and some freeze dried scallions. And of course I always love a good sale so got some Muenster and a beer cheese that I loooooooooooove. Hey, it's a food blog so are you really surprised the last thing I bought was food-related?
Because I need more spices like I need a hole in my head.

Would you go bungee jumping or sky diving?
Sky diving. When hell freezes over.

If you could eat lunch with one famous person, who would it be?
Assuming I couldn't dissolve into a fit of nervous giggles, or wet my pants from the terrifying awe that I'm in the presence of someone FAMOUS, I think right now it'd be Glennon Melton, who writes Momastery. Seriously, you should have seen me when I got notified she started following my Pinterest boards. Not gonna lie: I still have that email. I'm keeping it too.

Which store would you choose to max out your credit card?
SIS International Shop-Fair Trade in Davenport, IA. Coolest, coolest, COOLEST store EVER!! If you live in the Quad Cities area, go there. If you don't live in the QC area, road trip.

Is the glass half empty or half full?
Half full....of wine. Cheers!

What's the farthest-away place you've been?
Atsugi, Japan. I'm a Navy Brat (and proud of it!!), and my dad was stationed there when I was two until I was five. Yes, I could speak Japanese at the time, and no, I don't remember hardly any of it anymore.

What's under your bed?
Under-bed storage drawers. My house was built in the 1920's when people only owned six outfits and one good coat. I need every square inch of storage space I can get.

What is your favorite time of day?
Morning. I might need a cup, or three, of coffee before anyone is allowed to talk to me, but I'd still say that early morning quiet is my absolute favorite. That hour after my kids are in bed at night would be a close second favorite though.

What inspires you?
She might kill me for posting this picture, but I love it.

My mom. She is absolutely The Most Amazing Person I know. She has rolled with the punches of being a Military Wife (dude, anyone who's been there KNOWS what I'm talking about). She has started her own massage business over and over again whenever my parents moved. She went back to school and added Counselor and Yoga Instructor to her resume. Her house is always clean and restful. And hot damn she's a fabulous cook! I love my mom. I still want to be her when I grow up.
